Whenever you are in Rome, you must visit this part
of town. Via Masala is a street that runs next to the Rome Termini
Station or Stazione Termini or Stazione di Roma Termini. The Termini
Station is the end of the line for the 30 minutes express train ride
from Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Airport or commonly called Fiumicino
Airport (after the name of the airport's location).
Train from Leonardo Da Vinci (Fiumincino – FCO) airport to Vi Marsala:
In the terminal, follow the signs for 'ai treni,' or 'Train.' The
pathway from the terminal leads you to the train platform. Buy a ticket
for the non-stop train ride to Termini. Tickets can be purchased from
the ticket counter window, the vending machines, or a tobacco store on
the platform near the tracks. There are no “ticket collector” or
inspector on the trains to inspect your ticket, it is somewhat like an
honest system. After purchasing your ticket, you MUST stamp your
ticket. There are couple of machines on the platform that stamps the
tickets with the time and date stamp. No stamping your ticket gives the
impression that you are trying to reused that ticket again. Having an
unstamped ticket on a ride is similar to having an expired ticket or no
ticket at all. Remember, ignorance of a law is no excuse for violating
a crime. One might asked, what if I don't purchase a ticket and try to
get a free ride. Actually, no one will know and I am tempted to believe
that 80% of the time you might get away with it. However, occasionally,
an inspector will asked to see your ticket and if you don't have a
valid one, they will write you a violation ticket. I am not sure what
happens if you are a non-resident. My guess is you might have to pay
the violation in full at that moment. Don't quote me on this, but I
think the fees for the violation ticket is $100 Euro. To play safe,
ALWAYS do the right thing.
Using the train, in my opinion, is the most economical and fastest was
to get to Via Marsala. The 30 minutes express train ride cost
approximately 8 Euros or $12.00. I may be bias, but I believe that Via
Marsala is one of the BEST location for travelers to Rome. During my
last 10 trips to Rome, I have stayed on Via Marsala. Via Masala is the
midpoint of Rome and the central hub of buses, trains, hotels,
apartments, restaurants, cafe etc. Getting a train from Via Marsala to
other part of the country or Europe is just walking distance away.
On Via Marsala, there are plenty of options for restaurants. One can
walk all of their sightseeing spots from this location. It feels very
safe. One can take the bus from the Termini station to the Vatican. The
train platforms are clearly marked similar to any major U.S. Cities.
The stops are announced ahead of time plus the map or the routes are
displayed in the train. I had no problem getting around on my own. I
once walked from the Vatican to my hotel on Via Marsala. A good and
comfortable walking shoes is a must have.
In the immediate areas of Via Marsala are
inexpensive restaurants, bars, shoes and clothing vendors and other
budget hotels as well as banks, ATMs, souvenir shops and so on.
Do NOT let
your guide down, via Marsala is a very crowded street especially after
noon, local residents, tourists as well as beggars, pickpockets, and
folks just hanging out and milling around the terminal. Be warned about
pickpockets especially on crowded trains and buses. Most of them work
in team and can smell a foreigner like a shark with blood. Ladies, if
you don't have to, leave those large purses at home. Men don't put your
wallet in your back pocket, unless you have a button cover. I never
travel with my wallet. I put my credit or bank card in my front pocket
with whatever cash along with my ID. In general, via Marsala is a busy,
bustling thoroughfare--with narrow street & sidewalk and much
traffic and motorbikes throughout the day and night. 2-3 blocks in any
direction from the terminal is more subdued and quiet. Via Marsala is a
convenient location and is ideal and easily accessible for traveling by
public transportation to any part of Rome.
